Scope and Contents of the Records

This three ring binder, covered in faded blue fabric, contains four loose ledger sheets documenting the breakdown of the annual budget from 1955 through 1958. The pages inserted in the binder are divided into 35 sections, with headings such as "Acquisitions,""Equipment,""Negative Numbering System,""Photography," and "Visitors: Accidents in the Galleries." A label on the front reads: Policy Book / Administrative Manual / Up-to-date through approximately Oct. 1966 / Revised pages have not been added yet. The pages contain information about planning receptions, ordering supplies, creating signage, accepting applications, keeping records for the archives, and other tasks necessary to running the Institute.

History of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute

In 1950 Sterling and Francine Clark chartered the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute as a home for their extensive art collection. Opened to public in 1955, the Institute has built upon this extraordinary group of works to become one of the most beloved and respected art museums in the world, known for its intimate galleries and stunning natural environment. One of the few institutions in the United States that combines a public art museum with a complement of research and academic programs, including a major art history library, the Clark is now a leading international center for research and discussion on the nature of art and art history. Building upon the founders' legacy, the Institute has recently unveiled its master plan for the twenty-first century, which fosters the Clark's commitment to providing space for its expanding research and museum programs while maintaining the unique character of its beautiful rural setting.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

This binder was transferred from the office of John H. Brooks, who held various positions in the Institute from 1968 through 2007, to the office of the Library Director, Susan Roeper, in 1999. It was transferred along with over fifty scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to events and exhibitions at the Clark.

Acquisition Information

In June of 2007, this binder was transferred to the Archives from the office of the Library Director, along with over fifty scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to events and exhibitions at the Clark.

Processing Information

In June of 2007, Archivist Lacy Schutz examined and re-housed the binder in an acid-free box.
