Arrangement of the Records

In the first two boxes the collection is divided into four categories. The categories are financial records, renovations and expansion, mail order catalogues, product development, and committee records. The records in boxes 3 and 4 were found at a later date and are arranged roughly by topic as they were originally found.

Scope and Contents of the Records

This series contains an assortment of records from the museum shop including sales and inventory reports and ledgers, budgets, planning for store renovations and expansions (including the development of a satellite store in Lenox, MA), development of the café, development of the mail order catalogue, development of new museum shop products, and records from CAI committees on which Brian O'Grady, the shop manager from 1982-1997, served.


History of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute

In 1950 Sterling and Francine Clark chartered the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute as a home for their extensive art collection. Opened to public in 1955, the Institute has built upon this extraordinary group of works to become one of the most beloved and respected art museums in the world, known for its intimate galleries and stunning natural environment. One of the few institutions in the United States that combines a public art museum with a complement of research and academic programs, including a major art history library, the Clark is now a leading international center for research and discussion on the nature of art and art history. Building upon the founders' legacy, the Institute has recently unveiled its master plan for the twenty-first century, which fosters the Clark's commitment to providing space for its expanding research and museum programs while maintaining the unique character of its beautiful rural setting.

These records was accessioned from Storage A in July 2007.

Processing Information

30 boxes of materials from the museum shop were found in Storage A. Much of this material was discarded after assessment by Lacy Schutz, archivist, Susan Roeper, librarian, and Bob Gniadek, director of finance. The archives team processed the remaining records. The records were organized, staples were removed, and the items were placed in acid-free folders and boxes.
